To be eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) or Temporary Expanded Public Service Loan Forgiveness (TEPSLF), you must be employed full-time by a qualifying employer at the time you make each of the 120 qualifying payments, and at the time you apply for loan forgiveness.
The periods of employment do not need to be consecutive for this program, so you may return to work full-time at a qualifying non-profit or government agency employer in order to apply for PSLF/TEPSLF.
As a reminder, if you meet the following criteria, as detailed by the Department of Education, then you would qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness:
-
You must work for a government agency or for certain types of nonprofit organizations; work at least 30 hours per week for that agency or organization.
-
You must have Direct Loans (or consolidate other federal students loans to qualify). FFEL loans are not acceptable, nor are private student loans.
-
You must repay your loans on an income-driven repayment plan (IDR); and make 120 qualifying payments (Roughly ten years).

You do not need to be currently employed to apply for the Teacher Loan Forgiveness program. As long as you meet (or previously met) all of the requirements of the TLF program, your application will be reviewed and processed by your loan servicer.
In order to be eligible for Teacher Loan Forgiveness:
-
You must NOT have had an outstanding balance on Direct Loans or Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program loans as of Oct. 1, 1998, or on the date that you obtained a Direct Loan or FFEL Program loan after Oct. 1, 1998.
-
You must have been employed as a full-time, highly qualified teacher for five complete and consecutive academic years, and at least one of those years must have been after the 1997–98 academic year.
-
You must have been employed at an elementary school, secondary school, or educational service agency that serves low-income students (a "low-income school or educational service agency").
-
The loan(s) for which you are seeking forgiveness must have been made before the end of your five academic years of qualifying teaching service.*
